Zoning Board Information
Zoning is a restriction on the way land within its jurisdiction can be used. Zoning laws help local governmental agencies preserve property values and ensure communities are functional and safe places. All property owners must comply with the local zoning laws. If the property owner wishes to use his or her land in a way that does not comply with the requirements of the zoning laws for their property, the owner must be granted an exception by first filing an application with the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Sometimes zoning of a given area can also change. However any preexisting uses granted to a property are generally “grandfathered” in.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment considers applications for use variances that are specific exceptions and uses not otherwise permitted in certain zones of the City’s established land use ordinances. The Board also hears appeals to decisions made by the City’s Zoning Enforcement Officer, and interprets the land use ordinance when requested to do so.
Meetings for the Zoning Board are held on the last Thursday of each month. Please check the City calendar for times and locations.
